Exploring Black Photography with Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin — Freedom School Online Summer '24 Podcast EP 1

Podcast: Freedom Summer 2024 EP 1

In 2024, during the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Freedom School Online created a radical Black space, archive, and podcast. It aimed to showcase the work of influential West Coast-based Black cultural practitioners who are leading contemporary renaissances in their respective fields.

Our first episode: Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin, an acclaimed photographer. Named one of Time Magazine's top 12 African American photographers to follow, Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin is best known for his photo essays of urban environments and the evolving landscapes of places that hold significance for him and his community. The New York Times has lauded him as one of the top 5 essential artists to follow, describing his photography as a form of archaeology. Some of his recent projects document Black Space in LA, the changes in his home neighborhood of Hollywood, and the effects of the pandemic on Los Angeles' landscape.
